New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics For May 2023
On June 5, 2023, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of May 2023 on its website. For the month of May 2023, the overall index crime in New York City stayed flat compared to the same month last year. The New York Police Department recorded only a slight increase (0.1%) in overall index crime in May 2023 compared to May 2022. In May 2022, the New York Police Department recorded 10,603 crimes in New York City, whereas in May 2023, the Department recorded 10,610 crimes. For the month of May 2023, most categories of crimes saw significant reductions compared to the same month last year. The slight increase in crime was led by the 32.5% increase in grand larceny auto crimes. In May 2022, there were 1,033 grand larceny auto crimes in New York City, whereas in May 2023, there were 1,369 crimes.
The NYPD saw a drop in five of the seven index crimes in May 2023 compared with the same month last year. Murder saw the greatest reduction (33.3%). In May 2022, the city of New York saw 48 murder cases being recorded by the NYPD, whereas in May 2023, the NYPD recorded 32 murder cases. Rape cases decreased by 21% in May 2023 compared with May 2022. In May 2022, the NYPD recorded 157 rape cases, whereas in May 2023, the Department recorded 124 rape cases. However, the NYPD maintains that rape cases are still underreported. In its report, the NYPD urges victims of sexual assault to come forward. Robbery cases dropped by 11.1%, with May 2023 seeing 1,351 robbery cases, down from the 1,520 cases recorded in May 2022. Burglary and grand larceny dropped by 11.8% (1,278 v. 1,127) and 1.8% (4,257 v. 4,183), respectively.
According to the NYPD report, NYC saw reductions in five of the seven index crime categories through the first five months of this year. The NYPD reported that murder decreased by 14.1%. From January to May 2022, there were 184 murder cases in NYC, whereas from January to May 2023, there were 158 murder cases in the city. Rape cases dropped by 7.3%. From January to May 2022, 668 rape cases were recorded in NYC, whereas during that same period this year, 619 rape cases were recorded in the city. Robbery dropped by 3.9% (6,357 v. 6.615), grand larceny reduced by 0.6% (19,993 v. 20,121), and finally, burglary dropped by 7.7% (5,834 v. 6,319).
Regarding shooting incidents, the NYPD reported that in May 2023, NYC saw a 26.5% reduction in these incidents. This reduction resulted in a 25.8% decrease in shooting incidents in the city through the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year. Between January and May 2023, 154 fewer people were shot compared to the previous year.
Finally, the NYPD noted that hate crimes increased by 5% in May 2023 compared to the same month last year (59 v. 56).
