New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for June 2024
On July 5, 2024, the New York Police Department (NYPD) released the crime statistics for the month of June 2024. For the month of June 2024, the overall index crime reduced in New York City compared to the same month in 2024. In June 2024, there was a 4% drop in major crimes compared to June 2023. In June 2023, there were 11,040 major offenses in NYC, whereas in June 2024, there were 10,598 offenses. In the second quarter of 2024, major crimes dropped by 2.7% compared to the same quarter in 2023 (31,162 vs. 32,029). From January to June 2024, major crimes dropped by 2% compared to the same period last year (60,211 vs. 61,409).
Five out of the seven major index crime categories saw a decrease in June 2024. Murder reduced by 21.1%. In June 2023, there were 38 murder incidents in NYC, whereas in June 2024, there were 30 incidents. Robbery was reduced by 1.5% for the month of June 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. In June 2023, there were 1,448 robbery incidents in New York City. On the other hand, in June this year, there were 1,427 incidents. Burglary incidents decreased by 8.8% in the month of June 2024 compared to the same month last year. In June 2023, there were 1,033 burglary cases in New York City, whereas in June 2024, there were 942 burglary cases. Grand larceny dropped by 9.9%. In June last year, there were 4,831 grand larceny cases, whereas in June 2024, there were 3,949 grand larceny incidents. Finally, grand larceny auto reduced by 9.4%. In June 2023, there were 1,398 grand larceny auto cases in New York City, whereas in June 2024, there were 1,267 cases.
Rape and felony assault incidents increased in the sixth month of 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. Rape incidents increased by 59.1% from 110 to 175. On the other hand, felony assault cases increased by 6.7% for the month of June 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. In June 2023, there were 2,632 felony assault cases in New York City, whereas in June 2024, there were 2,808 incidents.
Shooting incidents increased by 4.8% for June 2024 compared to the same month last year (109 vs. 104). However, shooting incidents dropped from January to June 2024 and in the second quarter of the year. Also, fewer people were shot between January and June than during the same period last year. Through June 30, 2024, the NYPD officers seized 3,378 illegal guns. In June 2024, arrests for gun possession increased by 7.6% (368 vs. 342) compared to June 2023.
There was a 68% increase in hate crimes in June 2024 compared to June 2023. There were 47 hate crime incidents in NYC in June 2023, whereas in June 2024, there were 79 incidents. This increase was led by a 137% spike in anti-Jewish incidents (45 vs. 19).
