New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for July 2024

On August 6, 2024, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of July 2024 on its website. For the seventh month in a row this year, overall crime in New York City declined. For July 2024, overall crime reduced by 4.2% compared to the same month last year. In July 2023, there were 11,505 crimes in New York City, whereas in July 2024, there were 11,022 crimes. Shooting incidents continued to drop in the month of July 2024. In July 2024, shooting incidents in NYC reduced by 19.5% compared to the same month in 2023. In July 2023, there were 113 shooting incidents in NYC, whereas in July 2024, there were 91 incidents. Throughout the first seven months of the year, shooting incidents in NYC reduced by 10.9% compared to 2023 (530 vs. 595). This is the fewest number of shooting incidents in New York City in five years in both July and year-to-date comparisons. In July 2024, there were 24 fewer shooting victims in NYC compared to the same month in 2023. Between January and July 2024, there were 65 fewer victims compared to the same period in 2023.

In July 2024, NYC saw a drop in five out of the seven major index crime categories. There was a reduction in robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and grand larceny auto incidents. Robbery cases in New York City reduced by 3.8% in July 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. In July 2023, the NYPD recorded 1,543 robbery cases, whereas in July 2024, there were 1,485 robbery incidents in NYC. Felony assault dropped by 3.1%. The NYPD recorded a total of 2,756 felony assault cases in July 2023, whereas in July 2024, there were 2,671 felony assault incidents in NYC. Burglary cases reduced by 12% for the month of July 2024 compared to the same month last year (1,039 vs. 1,181). Grand larceny and grand larceny auto reduced by 1.9% and 8.7% respectively. Grand larceny cases dropped from 4,361 to 4,280, and grand larceny auto from 1,499 to 1,368.

The two major index crime categories that saw an increase in July 2024 compared to the same month last year were murder and rape. Murder cases increased by 15.8% for July 2024 compared to the same month in 2023 (44 vs. 38), whereas rape increased by 6.3% (135 vs. 127). However, while murder cases increased in July, fewer people were killed in NYC between January and July 2024 compared to the same period last year (221 vs 246). This was a 10.2% reduction. From January to July 2024, NYPD officers seized 3,937 illegal guns off the streets of New York. This contributed to the decrease in murder cases between January and July 2024.

Finally, hate crimes increased by 8% for the month of July 2024 compared to July 2023. In July 2023, there were 48 hate crime incidents in NYC, whereas in July 2024, there were 52 incidents. This increase was led by anti-Jewish offenses, which increased from 10 in July 2023 to 30 in July 2024.
