New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for January 2024

On February 6, 2024, the New York Police Department posted the crime statistics for the month of January 2024 on its website. For the month of January 2024, overall crime went down in New York City, and shootings continued to decline. Overall index crime decreased by 2.9% in January 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. In January 2024, there were 9,913 crimes in New York City, whereas in January 2023, the New York Police Department recorded 10,209 crimes. In January 2024, shooting incidents reduced by 10.8% in New York City compared to January 2023. There were 66 shooting incidents in January 2024, whereas in January 2023, there were 74 shooting incidents in New York City. When it comes to shooting victims, there was an 11.5% decrease in January 2024 compared to January 2023. In January 2023, there were 87 shooting victims in NYC, whereas in January 2024, there were 77 victims. Additionally, in January 2024, 330 people were arrested for possession of unlawful firearms. The NYPD seized 508 guns in January 2024.

In January 2024, New York City saw a drop in most crime categories. There were substantial drops in murder, burglary, and rape cases. Murder cases in New York City decreased by 25% in January 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. The NYPD recorded a total of 27 murder cases in January 2024, whereas in January 2023, there were 36 murder incidents in NYC. Burglary dropped by 19.8% in January 2024 compared to January 2023 (1,065 vs. 1,328). Rape cases decreased by 24.4%. In January 2024, there were 102 rape incidents in New York City, whereas in January 2023, there were 135 incidents. Felony assault and grand larceny auto cases also decreased for the month of January 2024 compared to the same month last year. Felony assault cases decreased by 1.5% (2,068 vs. 2,100), whereas grand larceny auto cases decreased by 3.8% (1,178 vs. 1,224). Regarding arrests for all major index crimes in NYC, the number increased by 5.7% in January 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

Robbery and grand larceny incidents in NYC increased in January 2024 compared to the same month in 2023. Robbery increased by 5.4% for the month of January 2024 compared to January 2023 (1,417 vs. 1,345) and grand larceny by 0.4% (4,056 vs. 4,041).

The NYPD reported that in January 2024, overall crime in public housing decreased by 2.2% compared to January 2023 (486 vs. 497).

Finally, hate crimes or bias incidents increased for the month of January 2024 compared to January 2023, led by an increase in anti-Jewish incidents (31 vs. 17). Hate crimes in NYC increased by 36% for the month of January 2024 compared to January 2023 (45 vs. 33).
