New York Police Department Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for August 2024
On September 4, 2024, the New York Police Department released the crime statistics for August 2024. Overall crime in New York City decreased for the month of August 2024 compared to the same month last year. For the month of August 2024, there were 10,869 criminal cases in NYC, whereas in August 2023, there were 11,618 cases. This was a 6.4% reduction. In the subway system, there was a 5.5% reduction in serious crimes from the beginning of this year to the end of August compared to the same period in 2023. From January to the end of August 2023, there were 1,479 serious crimes in the subway system, whereas from January to the end of August 2024, there were 1,398 crimes. Shooting incidents also decreased in August 2024 compared to the same month last year. There were 87 shooting incidents in August 2023, whereas in August 2024, there were 74 incidents. The number of shooting victims also went down in August 2024 compared to August 2023 (94 vs 95). From the beginning of the year to the end of August, the NYPD recovered 4,473 illegal firearms from New York streets. This played a significant role in the continuing reductions in violence and disorder in NYC.
In August 2024, New York City saw a drop in five major crime categories. Murder cases decreased by 53.1% from 32 in August 2023 to 15 in August 2024. Robbery cases decreased by 8.7% from 1,578 in August 2023 to 1,440 in August 2024. Burglary went down from 1,205 cases in August 2023 to 1,118 in August 2024. Grand larceny and grand larceny auto decreased by 9.5% and 5.5%, respectively. Grand larceny cases went from 4,695 in August 2023 to 4,251 in August 2024, while grand larceny auto cases went from 1,504 to 1,421.
Rape and felony assault cases in New York City increased in August 2024 compared to August 2023. Rape cases increased by 8.6% for the month of August 2024 compared to August 2023. In August 2023, there were 116 rape incidents in NYC, whereas in August 2024, there were 126 incidents. Felony assault cases increased by 0.4% in August 2024 compared to the same month last year. In August 2023, there were 2,488 felony assault cases in NYC, whereas in August 2024, there were 2,498 cases.
When it comes to arrests for major index crimes in the city, the Department’s enforcement increased in August 2024 compared to August 2023. In August 2024, 5,025 people were arrested in NYC in connection to major crimes, a 4.6% increase compared to August last year. From the beginning of the year to the end of August, there was a 9.6% increase in total arrests for major index crimes compared to the same period last year (38,839 vs. 35,442).
Finally, potential bias or hate crimes increased in the month of August 2024 compared to August 2023. Hate crimes in NYC increased from 27 incidents in August 2023 to 57 in August 2024. Seventeen of these new incidents were anti-Muslim.
